On Sunday, May 2, drag racing returned again to the airport in Sanford, Maine as almost 100 racers competed in 4x4, Dragster, and ATV performance and street classes over a 300 foot long sand track. The North East Off Road Vehicle Competition Association (NEORVCA) officiated over the event and over 1,300 spectators had a great time, got to see their favorite racers, learned more about this exciting sport, and helped raise $2,600.00 to benefit the programs at WABAN that are for children and adults with developmental disabilities. In the Top Eliminator 4x4 and Dragster Class, the first place winner was Ryan Normand, second place went to Norm Riche, Terry Taylor came in third, and John Lampros finished fourth. In the ATV Top Eliminator Class, the first place winner was Joshua Gochie, second place went to Larry Dagan, Greg Farwell came in third, and Bryce Legere finished fourth. For the 4x4 Street Class, the first place winner was Glen Googins, second place went to Rob Weymouth, Tome Dede came in third, and Mike Ward finished fourth. In the ATV Trail Class, the first place winner was Mike Chute, second place went to Christine Stevens, David Hart came in third, and Ryan Maloney finished fourth. In the Junior Class, Marco Morin Jr. finished first, Zach Cavanaugh was second, Cole Danis came in third, and Than Merrow finished fourth. While plans have not been finalized yet and various approvals will need to be received, so many spectators and competitors had so much fun and inquired about when the “next race” would be that another event has been tentatively scheduled for October.
Art of Transportation The 3rd annual Art of Transportation Car Show and Fundraiser for WABAN was be held at Shaw’s Ridge Farm in Springvale. This premier family event had something for everyone including the judging of cars and vehicles, lawn chair races, plastic model contest, hot wheels drag races, slow drags, and 50/50 drawings. Special awards and recognitions were given for the Taxpayer’s Best of Show, Children’s Best of Show, Largest Club Participation, Farthest Distance Driven, and many other categories.
