Children's Programs

Classroom funWaban’s Children’s Programs include community-based services and center-based services at our Child Development Center in Sanford. In the course of one year, over 200 children and families throughout York County are supported through these services.

Preschool Program:

  • A year-round program with a morning or afternoon session providing developmental therapy to children ages two and half to five years old.
  • Children participate in a small classroom setting staffed with a teacher and assistants, and receive speech, occupational and physical therapies through contacts with community providers as needed.
  • Teachers, therapists and parents work as a team to implement goals and objectives in the context of play.

RISE (Room for Individualized Supported Education)

  • A full day program for preschool children with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and/or Autism that provides a small classroom setting, intensive developmental therapy, and an emphasis on social, language, self-help skill building, and interactive play.

Therapeutic Preschool Program:

  • A year-round program with a morning or afternoon sessions for children, ages three to five, who have behavioral and social/emotional health needs.
  • In addition to the child's participation in a small and focused classroom setting, a licensed clinician works with the child and their family offering insight into the child's behavioral and emotional health development by providing information, support and family counseling.

Infant & Toddler Program:

  • A year-round Early Intervention Program services children ages birth through three who have been identified with special needs or who could be at risk for developmental delays, and their families.
  • A wide array of services is available for children and their families including: language based playgroups, parent and child playgroups, home-based services, parental support, and therapy services

Developmental Assessment Team:

  • Comprehensive developmental assessments are conducted weekly by an occupational therapist, speech pathologist, physical therapist, social worker and educational specialist.
  • Family members are full participants in the assessment process for children birth to five years old.

Children’s Mental Health Services:

  • Mental health services assist parents and family members to interact, relate and bond to an infant to positively affect the infant’s emotional growth and development.
  • Mental health services promote positive orientation and growth toward more integrated and independent levels of functioning by assisting the family in understanding the effects of the child’s diagnosis and the family’s ability to positively affect their child’s development.
  • Services are provided to children, birth to 20 years old, and their families and include assessment, information sharing, counseling and therapy by a licensed clinician. Services are provided at Waban’s Child Development Center or in the child’s home.

Case Management:

  • Waban's Children’s Case Management program helps parents of children birth to 21 years of age who have Mental Retardation, Mental Health Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, or other developmental delays/disabilities locate and access necessary services and supports for their children.
  • With the family the Case Manager: identifies the child’s strengths and needs, develops and coordinates a plan of care tailored to the child, connects families to services and supports, and helps ensure that the child’s needs are being met.
