Waban’s 44th annual telethon
SANFORD – The 44th Annual Waban Telethon was held on Saturday, March 21st , at the St. Ignatius Gym on Riverside Avenue in Sanford. The Telethon was sponsored by the St. Therese of Liseux Parish. While the economy continues to struggle and many people face significant financial obstacles, the community once again rose to the challenge. In spite of one of our longest, snowiest, and coldest winters in history, individuals, businesses, and organizations came together and demonstrated their unflagging support of the programs at Waban by raising $86,310.00!!
In addition to the wonderful entertainment, fun events throughout the day, samples of Heidi’s Pot Pies, and great ice cream donated by Shain’s of Maine, there were several special ceremonies. Long time host and television weatherman Kevin Mannix received a “Lifetime Achievement” award for his 25 years of hosting and promoting the Telethon. Waban staff member Edie Cole received the Waban Making a Difference Award for her committed and passionate service. In the community category, the Waban Making a Difference Award was given to Metrocast for their many year of service broadcasting the Telethon and tradition of generosity and donations made to Waban.
The Telethon was produced by a crew from Metrocast Cablevision. Coverage was provided by Metrocast Cablevision and Time-Warner Cablevision with an expanded viewing area going from Kittery to Presque Isle and through most of New Hampshire. In addition, the entire Telethon was “simulcast” and heard live on “The Legends” radio stations 1220 AM and 102.3 FM. The phone bank was provided by DSCI. This year’s hosts were Kevin Mannix of WCSH-TV, Kristen Guillemette Perfetuo, long-time volunteers RJ and Jim Legere, and Dave Stevens from “The Legends” . Some of the larger donors were:

In addition to large business donations of goods and services from Central Furniture and Landry’s Furniture, there were many other large and small personal and business donors, too numerous to mention, that were instrumental in making the Telethon such a huge success.
The funds from the Telethon will be used for developmental therapy, specialized equipment, therapeutic recreation, and other educational and habilitation-based services for children who attend the Fraser-Ford Waban Child Development Center or who receive services from the Case Management Program. Waban is exceptionally grateful and appreciative for all the tremendous support we received from all the volunteers and donors both before and during the Telethon.
